New trainers start working at a local gym and recruit friends and family as their first clients.<\/p><p>Over time, if you do a good job people will start recommending you and you\u2019ll pick up new clients, thereby <a href=\"http:\/\/ptpower.com\/how-to-grow-a-personal-training-business-with-the-end-game-in-mind\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">growing your business<\/a>.<\/p><p>Sounds like a solid plan, right? As simple as this sounds, it\u2019s NOT the only thing you should be doing. Here's why:<\/p><p>Most PTs have a high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpscout.net\/blog\/churn-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">churn rate<\/a>. This means that some of your existing clients are going to stop training with you (even if you're an amazing PT!), which means you will never have a full roster unless you're constantly marketing your services.&nbsp;<\/p><p>\u200bWhat does this have to do with SEO?&nbsp;<\/p><p>SEO is a huge industry. Companies pay millions annually to be ranked on the top of Google search. Being ranked on the first page of a Google search will help&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.totalcoaching.com\/blog\/build-an-amazing-personal-trainer-website\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">drive people to their site<\/a>, and hopefully these visitors become paying customers.<\/p><p><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">As a personal trainer, you need to become a BRAND<\/span><\/span>. Google is where research starts - You don't search for something online, you \"Google it!\"<\/h3><p>We can safely assume that when people&nbsp;look for a new personal trainer they will conduct a quick google search to see what comes up.<\/p><p>Let\u2019s look at a search done for personal trainers in Cardiff:<\/p><div style=\"width: 975px\" class=\"thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption\">\n<span class=\"tve_image_frame\">\n<img class=\"tve_image\" alt=\"Search results\" src=\"http:\/\/www.totalcoaching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/cardiff.png\" style=\"width: 975px\" width=\"975\" height=\"1044\" scale=\"0\">\n<\/span>\n<\/div><p>As you can see, Google shows 2 Google ads and then the local PT options.<\/p><p>Google will take information from websites, Google My Business accounts, and other citations they trust to determine which options show up first. <span class=\"bold_text\">The stars <\/span><span class=\"bold_text\">als<\/span><span class=\"bold_text\">o represent Google reviews about <\/span><span class=\"bold_text\">each<\/span><span class=\"bold_text\"> personal trainer.<\/span><\/p><p>In this example, Cardiff Personal Training Studio and Phil Parker are losing out on customers. <\/p><p>Why? <\/p><p>They have no reviews. Customer reviews are key.<\/p><p>Before you buy from any new website, brand, or shop, wouldn't you want to check out their reviews first?<\/p><p>You're not alone. About&nbsp;<strong>77% of people read online reviews<\/strong> before going ahead with a purchase and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/88-consumers-trust-online-reviews-much-personal-recommendations-195803\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">88% of people trust online reviews<\/a> as much as personal recommendations<\/strong>.<\/p><p>I guarantee that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perfectbalancept.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Perfect Balance Health\ufeff and Fitness<\/a> will get a much higher CTR (click through rate) than the 2 options listed above him\/her. This is purely due to the 8 reviews with an average score of 4.9\/5. Those ratings sure are convincing!<\/p><p>What have we learned so far?<\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">It\u2019s vital your business shows up on the first page of a Google search for personal trainers in your local area. You also want to have at least a few reviews <\/span>so that prospective customers trust you before they even know you.<\/p><p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shore.com\/en\/blog\/local-seo\">this SEO guide<\/a>,&nbsp;I've covered exactly how to do that. Isn't that enough?\"\u200b<\/h3><p>Social media is a&nbsp;super powerful tool and you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theptdc.com\/2013\/03\/5-things-fitness-professionals-must-know-about-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">easily attract new customers<\/a> and showcase results on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.<\/p><p>However, what most people don\u2019t realize is that <span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">the volume of people who could be attracted to your business via search engines FAR outweighs any traffic you can generate with social media<\/span>. This is your chance to really stand out and make a name for yourself in the crowded fitness industry.<\/p><p>I\u2019m going to give you a blueprint that will help you rank in Google search results, therefore drawing in hundreds&nbsp;of new daily visitors who will hopefully become paying customers.<\/p><p>Ready?&nbsp;<\/p><p>Let's do this!\u200b<\/p><h2 class=\"\"><strong>Step 1: Set Up Your Website &amp; Create Amazing Content<\/strong><\/h2><p>I\u2019m not going to show you how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.totalcoaching.com\/blog\/7-steps-to-become-a-successful-online-fitness-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">set up a website here<\/a> (you can do it easily via Wordpress for less than $100), but I am going to show you how to optimize your site to generate traffic every day.<\/p><p>For Google to rank you on their search results pages, you need a few fundamental things in place:<\/p><ol class=\"thrv_wrapper\"><li class=\"\">A website that is structured correctly (on-page SEO)<\/li><li class=\"\">A website that has great content (on-page SEO)<\/li><li class=\"\">A website with links pointing to it from credible sources (off-page SEO)<\/li><li class=\"\">A website that answers a search query (also known as keywords)<\/li><\/ol><p><span class=\"bold_text\">When setting up your site, your homepage should be optimized for your most <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bourncreative.com\/why-keywords-still-matter-seo\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">important keyword<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>(more on that in a moment).<span class=\"bold_text\"><\/span><\/p><p>A web page is made up of the elements seen below. Refer to the picture below for the placement of each element:<\/p><ol class=\"thrv_wrapper\"><li class=\"\">Content (Paragraphs)<\/li><li class=\"\">Page Title (Meta Title)<\/li><li class=\"\">Headings (H1, H2, H3 with H1 being the most important)<\/li><li class=\"\">Page URL (the shorter the better)<\/li><li class=\"\">Images (Add an \"Alt Tag\" to describe what the image is, Google cannot read images)<\/li><li class=\"\">Keywords (add your target keyword in the content + related keywords to help Google identify what the page is about. Your target keyword should also be in your meta title, H1 tag, and within the first 100 words of content)<\/li><\/ol><div style=\"width: 688px\" class=\"thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption\">\n<span class=\"tve_image_frame\">\n<img class=\"tve_image\" alt=\"Onpage\" src=\"http:\/\/www.totalcoaching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/onpage.png\" style=\"width: 688px\" width=\"688\" height=\"602\" scale=\"0\">\n<\/span>\n<\/div><p>Each page on your website must have the above structure to ensure it\u2019s optimized for Google. So, if you have 5 different search terms that you want to be found for, you need 5 optimized pages (one for each term) to attract Google.<\/p><div style=\"width: 975px\" class=\"thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption\">\n<span class=\"tve_image_frame\">\n<img class=\"tve_image\" alt=\"Meta\" src=\"http:\/\/www.totalcoaching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/meta.png\" style=\"width: 975px\" width=\"975\" height=\"332\" scale=\"0\">\n<\/span>\n<\/div><p>Meta data is the data that actually shows up in the Google search results page as shown in the image below. It doesn\u2019t actually show up on your web page (only on the browser tab like in the picture above).<\/p><p>Once you have the structure set, you then need to focus each page for a certain keyword.<\/p><p><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">Your homepage will be your focus keyword for local search.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>For example, if you\u2019re a Cardiff personal trainer you should have \u201cCardiff personal trainer\u201d in your homepage title, meta data, H1 tag, and in the content.<\/p><p>Your home page should have written content about you, your services, some client success stories, videos, images, and more. This should be your main hub of information. It should also contain your address, number, name (business name), email, and any other relevant pieces of data.<\/p><p>Once you\u2019ve done that, you then need to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seonick.net\/optimize-any-page-for-your-target-keywords\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">optimize your other pages<\/a> on the website for other keywords. Other pages will usually be about your services and they will appear in the navigation menu. For example, you might have the following:<\/p><ul class=\"thrv_wrapper\"><li class=\"\">Fat Loss<\/li><li class=\"\">Muscle Gain<\/li><li class=\"\">Contest Preparation<\/li><li class=\"\">Meal Plans<\/li><li class=\"\">Etc.<\/li><\/ul><p>These pages should be <a href=\"http:\/\/backlinko.com\/on-page-seo\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">optimized for that certain keyword<\/a> with your location in the title. Adding the location makes it easier for you to rank for search queries such as \u201cfat loss Cardiff,\u201d \u201ccontest preparation Cardiff,\u201d \u201cmuscle gain Cardiff,\u201d etc. <span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">You will not rank for \u201cfat loss\u201d and \u201cmuscle gain\u201d in Google since these terms are far too competitiv<\/span><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">e<\/span><\/span><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"><span class=\"bold_text\">, so adding your location is a good way to catch some searches done locally for these.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>Now you should have a website that has all its pages focused on a certain keyword and optimised fully for Google.<\/p><h2 class=\"\"><strong>The Real Traffic Driver: Your Blog<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"bold_text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.totalcoaching.com\/blog\/how-to-start-a-fitness-blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Your website needs a blog.<\/a><\/p><p>Your blog should be in your main navigation and will act as your hub for all&nbsp;the articles you write on topics related to personal training. This is where your amazing content will be posted and how you\u2019ll drive a huge amount of traffic to your site. <\/p><p>Before you start writing on your blog, you need to <a href=\"http:\/\/conversionchamp.com\/keyword-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">do some keyword research<\/a> and write strategically. Let me show you an example of what you should do with both of these tools...<\/p><p>I plugged in a few random keywords to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesitsgirls.com\/seo\/google-keyword-planner-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Google keyword planner<\/a>:<\/p><div style=\"width: 847px\" class=\"thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption img_style_lifted_style2\">\n<span class=\"tve_image_frame\">\n<img class=\"tve_image\" alt=\"Keyword\" src=\"http:\/\/www.totalcoaching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Keyword.png\" style=\"width: 847px\" width=\"598\" height=\"353\" scale=\"0\">\n<\/span>\n<\/div><p>As you can see, the terms \u201cFlexible Dieting\u201d and \u201cHow to get a bigger bum\u201d have 1,000 searches and 4,400 searches per month.<\/p><p><span class=\"bold_text\">If you were to rank number 1 for both of these terms, you could theoretically be able to drive 5,400 people to your site every month<\/span> (the number is usually lower due to click through rates and these numbers being estimates).<\/p><p>\"Summer weight loss,\" \"outside workout ideas,\" and \"squatting advice\" only bring in a total of 40 searches per month. This doesn\u2019t mean you shouldn\u2019t write an article on them - 40 people looking for advice on workout ideas, squatting advice, and summer weight loss could be 40 clients for you!<\/p><p><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">Don\u2019t throw these away just because they are low volume terms,&nbsp;instead try and merge them into a single guide.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;A guide could cover summer weight loss by doing outside workouts. You could then add&nbsp;squatting advice to go along with this as part of the workouts you describe. <span class=\"bold_text\">You can target more than 1 keyword per article, but it\u2019s recommended to stick to a main keyword first.<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"bold_text\"><span class=\"underline_text\">Optional Step<\/span>:<\/span> SEMRush is a SEO tool that\u2019s for advanced marketers, but&nbsp;you don\u2019t need to buy this.<\/p><p>If you did want some further insight into how hard it would be to rank number 1 for the search terms, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">SEMrush<\/a> gives you this data.<\/p><div style=\"width: 975px\" class=\"thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption img_style_lifted_style2\">\n<span class=\"tve_image_frame\">\n<img class=\"tve_image\" alt=\"SemRush\" src=\"http:\/\/www.totalcoaching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/SEM-Rush.png\" style=\"width: 975px\" width=\"598\" height=\"183\" scale=\"0\">\n<\/span>\n<\/div><p>The difficulty % is ranked out of 100 and the higher this number, the harder it is to rank for this keyword.<\/p><p>For example, the term \"flexible dieting\" is given a&nbsp;64%, which means that there is moderate competition for this search term.<\/p><p>\"Summer weight loss\" comes in at 80%, therefore it would be far more difficult to rank for. And with a search volume of only 30 it may not be the best option to target.<\/p><p>Now that I've seen this data, I might re-think my previous statement where I recommended making a bigger article covering the smaller keywords. \"Summer weight loss\" is just too competitive and offers too little traffic potential. I'd skip it altogether.<\/p><p>I know this is getting technical, but it's all very important. Hopefully you\u2019re still with me here!<\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"><span class=\"bold_text\">To simplify this, put in some article ideas you have into the Google keyword planner. Buzzsumo is a goldmine for finding content that performs well on the web.<\/p><h2 class=\"\"><strong>Step 2: Promotion\/Outreach<\/strong><\/h2><p>If you\u2019ve read a few articles on SEO you may have come across people who claim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingmarty.co.uk\/2013\/11\/backlinks-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">links are dead<\/a> and they have no place anymore.<\/p><p>Don\u2019t listen.<\/p><p><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">Links are king and you need links pointing to your site to rank in Google for your target search terms<\/span><\/span>. Having links point to your site is like having a vote for your website.<\/p><p>Think about it.<\/p><p>If you have a link (or vote) from a huge site like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">BBC<\/a>, then Google would consider you a quality resource. If you have 100's of votes (links) from <a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/clean-bad-backlinks\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">spam sites with no relevance<\/a>, Google will treat you the same and you won\u2019t be shown in the search results.<\/p><h3 class=\"\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px !important;\">The goal is simple: Get as many links from high quality and relevant websites as possible.<\/h3><p>A high number of quality links + great content that\u2019s structured and optimized for SEO = Top rankings.<\/p><p>It sounds easy, but here\u2019s the biggest mistake most people make:<\/p><p><strong><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">They publish their great quality content, post it on their social media, and sit back and wait.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p>They think that writing the content is enough. But, if you\u2019re not actively <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artorderpublishing.com\/artorder\/promote-your-blog\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">promoting your content<\/a> to&nbsp;people who can share it with their audience and link to it from their own website, then it\u2019s worth nothing. <span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">Create content for industry influencers<\/span><\/span>. You want to make sure that people who yield true power in the industry can easily share it and link to it.<\/p><p>Analyze the industry for trends.<\/p><p>I noticed a huge trend in the talk about flexible dieting, so I acted on it. I didn\u2019t sit back and hope an industry expert like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biolayne.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Layne Norton<\/a> picked up my flexible dieting article. I emailed him prior to the article being published, asking him for a quote on flexible dieting. I then told him I\u2019d send him the link once live.<\/p><p>What happened? He liked the content and shared it on his social media.<\/p><div style=\"width: 591px\" class=\"thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption\">\n<span class=\"tve_image_frame\">\n<img class=\"tve_image\" alt=\"Email\" src=\"http:\/\/www.totalcoaching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Email.png\" style=\"width: 591px\" width=\"591\" height=\"432\" scale=\"0\">\n<\/span>\n<\/div><h3 class=\"\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px !important;\">The results? <span class=\"underline_text\">3,723 visitors in ONE day<\/span>. Over 10,000 visitors since it went live. Now the 2nd most viewed page on the entire website.<\/h3><div style=\"width: 777px\" class=\"thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption img_style_lifted_style2\">\n<span class=\"tve_image_frame\">\n<img class=\"tve_image\" alt=\"Analytics\" src=\"http:\/\/www.totalcoaching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Analytics.png\" style=\"width: 777px\" width=\"598\" height=\"89\" scale=\"0\">\n<\/span>\n<\/div><p>The graph below shows the spike in traffic the day it went live. <span class=\"bold_text\">A great piece of content <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robbierichards.com\/seo\/16-explosive-content-promotion-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">promoted to the right people<\/a> will have dramatic results<\/span>. You've optimized it for on-page SEO. You've found a topic with a lot of search volume that's hot in the industry. You write an EPIC piece of content and promote it to the influencers. You get 50+ links, 1000's of visits and now rank number 1 in Google. <span class=\"bold_text\">You sit back and nothing happens. Just some nice stats on your screen.<\/span><\/p><p>I\u2019ve had this happen to me.
