You need to promote yourself and your business.\u200b<\/blockquote><div style=\"width: 1192px\" class=\"thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption img_style_lifted_style2\">\n<span class=\"tve_image_frame\">\n<img class=\"tve_image\" alt=\"pro writer\" src=\"http:\/\/www.totalcoaching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/pro-writer.png\" style=\"width: 1192px\" width=\"598\" height=\"300\" scale=\"0\">\n<\/span>\n<\/div><p>Writing&nbsp;is perhaps the most effective way to accomplish this, which is why I\u2019ve&nbsp;decided to write this article on how to be a more effective writer.<\/p><p>I\u2019m really passionate about this subject because writing has&nbsp;undeniably&nbsp;been the linchpin for my own success in the fitness&nbsp;arena \u2014 it\u2019d be great if I had the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/50-fittest-athletes\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">best physique<\/a>, the highest IQ, or the most famous clients, but sadly none of these things are the case. <\/p><p>Instead, I\u2019m an experienced and&nbsp;thoughtful&nbsp;coach who has a unique and relevant point of view about fitness. <span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"><span class=\"bold_text\">The&nbsp;challenge&nbsp;is to&nbsp;reach the people who are most likely to value the insights that I have to offer<\/span><\/span><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">.<\/span><\/span> And as it turns out, the ability to write is one of the very best ways to accomplish this goal.<\/p><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_custom_html_shortcode\" style=\"margin-bottom: -20px !important;\"><iframe src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/xieuDEXX78OYw\" width=\"600\" height=\"263\" frameborder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><p><a href=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/tim-kaine-xieuDEXX78OYw\"><\/a><\/p><div class=\"tve_iframe_cover\"><\/div><\/div><p class=\"tve_p_center italic_text\">\u200bIt's time to learn how to write like a pro!<\/p><h2 class=\"\"><span class=\"bold_text\">The Case For Becoming A Much Better Writer<\/span><\/h2><p>Now before you write this off (note pun please) as something you can\u2019t do, I\u2019d like to make something clear: I\u2019m minimally interested in the&nbsp;technical elements of writing. In fact, I\u2019m not even&nbsp;sure what a supposition is, and I personally type with two fingers. Instead, <span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"><span class=\"bold_text\">I\u2019m interested in writing as a <span class=\"underline_text\">leveraged<\/span> form of <\/span><em><span class=\"bold_text\">communication<\/span><\/em><\/span><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>Note that wood&nbsp;\u201cleveraged:\u201d<\/p><p>If you work with a personal training client, your leverage is 1:1.<\/p><p>If you train a small group, your leverage is around 1:8-12<\/p><p>If you speak to a group of people, your leverage is even better: perhaps 1:100.<\/p><h3 class=\"tve_p_center italic_text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px !important;\">However, if you publish an article in an established magazine (online or offline), your reach is multiplied <em>far<\/em> beyond any of the numbers I\u2019ve just cited.&nbsp;<\/h3><p>Over time, you might in fact reach millions of people. And, in many cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writersincharge.com\/more-websites-that-pay\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">you\u2019ll be paid for doing it!<\/a><\/p><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_custom_html_shortcode\" style=\"margin-bottom: -20px !important;\"><iframe src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/3o6ZsTCbyZjhzC5XTG\" width=\"600\" height=\"219\" frameborder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><p><a href=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/robin-schulz-robin-schulz-nature-one-3o6ZsTCbyZjhzC5XTG\"><\/a><\/p><div class=\"tve_iframe_cover\"><\/div><\/div><p class=\"tve_p_center italic_text\">Build a HUGE audience (and loyal following) using your written words.<\/p><p>There\u2019s a second reason you should develop your&nbsp;writing&nbsp;skills, which at first might seem less pragmatic, but in reality, is just as crucial as the first reason I provided: <em style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"><span class=\"italic_text\"><span class=\"bold_text\">Writing is the best way to develop and refine your unique point of view<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"italic_text\"><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/p><p>There\u2019s an old saying that goes&nbsp;\u201cWhen one teaches, two learn.\u201d&nbsp;This applies to writing, because ultimately, writing is a form of teaching. If you can\u2019t effectively <a href=\"http:\/\/thewritepractice.com\/writing-voice\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">describe your point of view<\/a>, you don\u2019t <u>have<\/u> a point of view.<\/p><p>With the&nbsp;assumption that I\u2019ve made a good case for&nbsp;becoming&nbsp;a more effective writer, let\u2019s shift our attention to three different steps or strategies&nbsp;that'll help you do just that.<\/p><h2 class=\"\"><span class=\"bold_text\">1.&nbsp;Find Your Writing Voice<\/span><\/h2><p>Needless to say, in order to write, you\u2019ll need to find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copyblogger.com\/get-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">something worthwhile to write about<\/a><em><\/em>. And when I say&nbsp;\u201cworthwhile,\u201d&nbsp;that applies to both you and your intended reader. Your subject matter (and the way you write about it) must be some combination of entertaining, educational, and viral.<\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"><span class=\"bold_text\">Ultimately, the goal of any piece of written content is to <\/span><em><span class=\"bold_text\">change the reader\u2019s behavior<\/span><\/em><\/span><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">:<\/span><\/span> in the case of fitness writing, it\u2019s&nbsp;typically&nbsp;to get them to adopt more effective training and nutrition&nbsp;strategies. <\/p><p>But also, we\u2019re looking for our readers to <a href=\"http:\/\/dropinlocal.com\/know-like-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">view you in a more positive light<\/a> than they did before (credentialization) and also, hopefully, to purchase your products and\/or services at some point.<\/p><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_custom_html_shortcode\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Get <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TheGoods?src=hash\">#TheGoods<\/a> on how to find your voice on social media (may involve bad singing).<br><br>WATCH: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XyudhHmjMe\">https:\/\/t.co\/XyudhHmjMe<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FzUsbezMhn\">pic.twitter.com\/FzUsbezMhn<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Goodfellow Creative (@GoodyCreative) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GoodyCreative\/status\/771813911771418624\">September 2, 2016<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<code class=\"tve_js_placeholder\">[tcb-script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"][\/tcb-script]<\/code><\/div><p>As it turns out, this first step is a&nbsp;challenge for new and experiences writers alike: <\/p><ul class=\"thrv_wrapper\"><li class=\"\">For new writers, the problem is that you haven\u2019t yet refined&nbsp;your point&nbsp;of view. <\/li><li class=\"\">For experienced writers, the&nbsp;problem&nbsp;is that you\u2019ve already shared your point of&nbsp;view&nbsp;hundreds or perhaps even thousands of times, and you can\u2019t figure out anything new to share with your&nbsp;audience.<\/li><\/ul><p>Here\u2019s some food for thought for both camps:<\/p><p>If you\u2019re new to writing and <a href=\"http:\/\/writetodone.com\/31-ways-to-find-inspiration-for-your-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">need a topic<\/a>, think about the ideas or practices you\u2019re&nbsp;excited about \u2014 the things you care deeply about. Or (and perhaps even better) <span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">consider the things that drive you crazy<\/span><\/span> \u2014 perhaps it\u2019s the <span class=\"bold_text\"><\/span>common mistakes people make (as seen in the video below)<span class=\"bold_text\"><\/span>, and what you think they should do instead. <\/p><div class=\"thrv_responsive_video thrv_wrapper rv_style_lifted_style4\" data-overlay=\"0\" data-type=\"youtube\" data-embed_type=\"inline\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OJ1BIgXSLnA\" data-embeded-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OJ1BIgXSLnA\" data-autoplay=\"0\" data-rel=\"0\" data-modestbranding=\"1\" data-showinfo=\"0\">\n<div class=\"tve_responsive_video_container\" style=\"display: block;\">\n<div class=\"video_overlay\"><\/div>\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OJ1BIgXSLnA?rel=0&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;controls=1&amp;showinfo=0&amp;fs=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" style=\"display: block;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OJ1BIgXSLnA?rel=0&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;controls=1&amp;showinfo=0&amp;fs=1&amp;wmode=transparent\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><p>I use <a href=\"https:\/\/evernote.com\/?var=c\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Evernote<\/a> to keep a list of unfinished article concepts that I revisit each day that I work on my writing.<\/p><p>For highly experienced writers, I feel your pain! What I find helpful is to always stay&nbsp;alert&nbsp;to new topics and trends through social media outlets. <\/p><blockquote class=\"\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px !important;\">When you happen across a post with high numbers of comments, that\u2019s a sign that it\u2019s a hot topic that you might write about. <\/blockquote><p><span class=\"bold_text\" style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">And remember, writing isn\u2019t only about writing about new <\/span><em><span class=\"bold_text\" style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">topic<\/span><\/em><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">s<\/span><\/span> \u2014 often it\u2019s more about covering familiar themes in a <a href=\"https:\/\/agileleanlife.com\/skyscraper-technique-skyrocket-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">new, improved way<\/a>.<span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"><\/span><\/span> As a lifter and a coach who also writes, I\u2019ve trained myself to be&nbsp;constantly on the&nbsp;lookout for new article topics whenever I\u2019m watching other people workout, whenever I\u2019m discussing fitness with anyone, and\/or whenever I\u2019m reading other people\u2019s writing. <\/p><p>Your next topic is always out there, you\u2019ve just gotta find it!<\/p><h2 class=\"\"><span class=\"bold_text\">2.&nbsp;Start Writing<\/span><\/h2><p>Every writer knows that there\u2019s nothing more daunting than staring at a blank Word document.&nbsp;Like most things, the way to get better at writing is by actually <u>doing<\/u> it. This means that your first writing projects might not be up to the standard that you\u2019re hoping for. That\u2019s fine. <span class=\"bold_text\"><\/span><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">Just start writing, even if you have no idea what you\u2019ll do with it.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"bold_text\"><\/span><\/p><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_custom_html_shortcode\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rokiskyfitness Tip of The Day #91: How To Become A Great Writer Part 1: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tAMinwWIe6\">https:\/\/t.co\/tAMinwWIe6<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YouTube\">@YouTube<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Erik Rokisky (@rokiskyfitness) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rokiskyfitness\/status\/760823992617926656\">August 3, 2016<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<code class=\"tve_js_placeholder\">[tcb-script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"][\/tcb-script]<\/code><\/div><p>My personal goal (which I don\u2019t always hit by the way) is to write 5000 words a week. If you\u2019re new to the practice, I\u2019d suggest a much smaller number \u2014 perhaps more along the lines of 250 words a day. <span class=\"bold_text\">If you commit to this, you\u2019ll have 1750 new words each week, which is a full-length article<\/span>. Once 250 words becomes fairly easy, bump it up to 500 and so on.<\/p><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_custom_html_shortcode\" style=\"margin-bottom: -20px !important;\"><iframe src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/nxUUZ4MVvJfKU\" width=\"600\" height=\"264\" frameborder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><p><a href=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/nxUUZ4MVvJfKU\"><\/a><\/p><div class=\"tve_iframe_cover\"><\/div><\/div><p class=\"italic_text tve_p_center\"><span class=\"bold_text\"><\/span>Ultimately, the key is simply to start.<span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"><\/span><\/span><\/p><p>And&nbsp;that\u2019s much more likely to happen if you <em>prioritize<\/em> your writing output. Personally, I always try to get my writing knocked out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quicksprout.com\/2015\/01\/23\/the-scientifically-proven-best-time-to-think-and-write-creatively\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">as early in the day as possible<\/a>, while energy is still high and distractions are low. <\/p><p>From the weekly point of view, I try to get my 5000 words completed as early in the week as possible \u2014&nbsp;usually by Thursday. So in other words, every day and every week I try to <em>front load<\/em> my writing output.<\/p><h3 class=\"\">A Few Thoughts About Style:<\/h3><p><span class=\"bold_text\">\u2022 I always want my writing to sound like natural&nbsp;speech<\/span> when I read it from the page. To that end, I always use contractions (such as&nbsp;\u201ccan\u2019t\u201d and&nbsp;\u201chaven\u2019t\u201d)&nbsp;whenever possible, and I\u2019m not against common slang either (\u201cgonna,&nbsp;\u201djacked\u201d). The more my writing <a href=\"http:\/\/seopressor.com\/blog\/write-in-conversational-tone-increase-readership\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">sounds like natural conversation<\/a>, the easier it\u2019ll be to read and&nbsp;comprehend.<\/p><p><span class=\"bold_text\">\u2022 Controversial and polarizing topics are great<\/span>, <em>as long as<\/em> they\u2019re not controversial and polarizing for they\u2019re own sake. I\u2019m always happy when people love <u>or<\/u> hate my writing \u2014 it\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/oliveremberton.com\/2014\/if-youre-not-pissing-someone-off-you-probably-arent-doing-anything-important\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">when they don\u2019t have a strong opinion<\/a> that I start to worry.<\/p><p><span class=\"bold_text\">\u2022&nbsp;\u201cNumerical\u201d&nbsp;or&nbsp;\u201clist\u201d&nbsp;articles are the&nbsp;easiest&nbsp;pieces to write <\/span><u><span class=\"bold_text\">and<\/span><\/u><span class=\"bold_text\"> to read.<\/span> For example, \"The 3 Biggest Mistakes Newbies Make In the Gym\" would be a simple topic to write, and it would likely draw the attention of people who are just starting out with exercise.<\/p><p><span class=\"bold_text\">\u2022 Use stories whenever possible.<\/span> This is the weakest aspect of my writing game personally. Human beings have communicated via stories for thousands of years, and are still <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/marketing-and-sales\/our-insights\/the-power-of-storytelling-what-nonprofits-can-teach-the-private-sector-about-social-media\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">hard-wired for story-telling<\/a>. So rather than simply stating something like&nbsp;\u201cToo many trainers use stability training drills for their clients,\u201d&nbsp;share a personal experience in the form of a story. Take your reader from theory to practice so that they\u2019ll actually benefit from reading your content.<\/p><h2 class=\"\"><span class=\"bold_text\">3. Get Published<\/span><\/h2><p>If you\u2019re not a seasoned writer, it\u2019s highly likely that you\u2019ll feel intimidated about offering your content to an established publication, be it online or offline. Or, perhaps&nbsp;you\u2019ve already suffered a rejection? <\/p><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_custom_html_shortcode\" style=\"margin-bottom: -20px !important;\"><iframe src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/L3TJlPdnJffDq\" width=\"600\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><p><a href=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/epitaphrecords-falling-in-reverse-just-like-you-epitaph-records-L3TJlPdnJffDq\"><\/a><\/p><div class=\"tve_iframe_cover\"><\/div><\/div><p class=\"italic_text tve_p_center\">If you've been rejected, welcome to the club, and don\u2019t take it personally. <\/p><blockquote class=\"\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px !important;\">Whether or not you succeed in selling your content right out of the gate, I\u2019d strongly urge you to consider creating a blog and to make regular posts. It\u2019s a great way to keep yourself accountable, hone your skills, and garner valuable feedback about your writing.<\/blockquote><p><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">This could be as simple as making regular posts on your Facebook page, so there\u2019s absolutely no reason why you can\u2019t do it.<\/span><\/span> <\/p><p>If your&nbsp;writing\u2019s&nbsp;good, people will notice \u2014 they\u2019ll share your content, and before long, you\u2019ll have made a name for yourself. For each piece that you post, take note of how much interaction you&nbsp;receive \u2014 anytime you see a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloggingwizard.com\/encourage-social-sharing\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">high number of likes, shares, and\/or comments<\/a>, it\u2019s sure sign that you\u2019re on the right track.<\/p><p>Like anything else, successful&nbsp;writing comes down to focusing on the <em>process<\/em> more than the anticipated result. <span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">When you write more, you\u2019ll become a better writer. When&nbsp;you\u2019re a better writer, your writing will reach more eyeballs.<\/span><\/span> And when that happens, the results tend to take care of themselves.<\/p><h2 class=\"\"><span class=\"bold_text\">Here\u2019s Your Challenge\u2026<\/span><\/h2><p><span class=\"bold_text\">Oh, and just in case you were waiting for a call-to-action, I want you to go write 500 words <\/span><em><span class=\"bold_text\">right now<\/span><\/em><span class=\"bold_text\">. I\u2019m serious!<\/span> <\/p><p>Think of&nbsp;something that really pisses you off, or something that really excites you. Tell me about it right now. Because that\u2019s all writing really is \u2014 you\u2019re just expressing your opinion to others. You do this all the time in conversation, so why is it so hard to do it in writing? Answer: it\u2019s not. Don\u2019t make me come over there \u2014 500 words.<\/p><h3 class=\"tve_p_center\">Was this helpful?
