It's sometimes seen as a <a href=\"http:\/\/thesoulagentblog.com\/selling-dirty-word\/\" class=\"\">dirty word<\/a>. So, let\u2019s clear something up:<\/p><blockquote class=\"\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px !important;\" spellcheck=\"false\">Selling does NOT mean tricking someone into buying your product, or hiring you to train them.<\/blockquote><p>You\u2019re good at what you do, right?<\/p><p>You get results?<\/p><p spellcheck=\"false\" style=\"white-space: normal;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"><span class=\"bold_text\">And you know that if people sign up with you, they\u2019ll drop pounds, get <\/span><span class=\"bold_text\">more fit<\/span><\/span><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">, look better, ultimately live longer, feel happier, and get more confidence.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p spellcheck=\"false\" style=\"white-space: normal;\">But getting that across to Joe or Jane Average who thinks fitness is just a chore is difficult \u2026 seriously difficult.<\/p><p spellcheck=\"false\">With so many <a href=\"http:\/\/boomboomperformance.com\/fitness-gimmicks-vs-lifestylehabits\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">quick-fix gimmicks<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jenselter.com\/nutrition\/2016\/8\/15\/watch-out-for-these-fad-diets-that-dont-work\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">fad diets<\/a> out there, the general public\u2019s guard is up, with their B.S. radars on high alert, and to them, you could be just another shady charlatan, out to make a quick buck off their weight-loss woes.<\/p><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_custom_html_shortcode\" style=\"margin-bottom: -20px !important;\"><iframe src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/aUZ7mLID5CEM0\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/fitness-aUZ7mLID5CEM0\"><\/a><\/p><div class=\"tve_iframe_cover\"><\/div><\/div><p class=\"tve_p_center italic_text\">You're not selling Shake Weights, are you? You are offering real value!<\/p><p style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">So how is a credible, reputable, genuine trainer like you or I supposed to show people just how incredible their life can be if they invest in us?<\/p><p>The answer: Copywriting.<\/p><h2 class=\"\" style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\"><span class=\"bold_text\">A (Brief) Copywriting Overview<\/span><\/h2><p>If you\u2019ve ever read a sales page for a product, that\u2019s copywriting.<\/p><p>An infomercial video is copywriting (as the script was written.)<\/p><p>Most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.totalcoaching.com\/blog\/personal-trainer-marketing\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">emails are copywriting<\/a>.<\/p><p style=\"white-space: normal;\" spellcheck=\"false\">Copywriting is anything designed to invoke an action. It\u2019s often known as \u2018direct response\u2019 copywriting, as the idea is that it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.printwand.com\/blog\/14-tips-for-writing-the-best-call-to-action-with-examples\" class=\"\">gets a direct response<\/a> from a reader, whether that response is to click on a link, join a group, perform a task, or the holy grail... sign up and pay for what we have to offer.<\/p><p style=\"white-space: normal;\" spellcheck=\"false\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"><span class=\"bold_text\">Copywriting is <\/span><span class=\"bold_text\">NOT<\/span><\/span><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">&nbsp;lying about how awesome you are, or making false promises. You're selling the feeling that comes with being fit.<\/p><p>As an example, you could say:<\/p><blockquote class=\"\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px !important;\"><em>Lose up to 15 pounds in your first 6 weeks of training.<\/em><\/blockquote><p>But a better way of phrasing this would be:<\/p><blockquote class=\"\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px !important;\" spellcheck=\"false\"><em>By the end of our first 6 weeks together, I guarantee you\u2019ll have lost weight - even as much as 15 pounds.<\/em><\/blockquote><blockquote class=\"\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px !important;\" spellcheck=\"false\"><em>Imagine the positive compliments you\u2019ll get from your family, how friends and colleagues will be in awe of your achievements, and just think how much more confident you\u2019ll feel with your body.\u201d<\/em><\/blockquote><p style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">You\u2019ve got to talk to your prospects about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waybetter.com\/WayBetterToday\/waybettertoday\/livebetter\/emotional-side-weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">emotional journey<\/a> they\u2019ll go on with you.<\/p><h2 class=\"\"><span class=\"bold_text\">Tip #2 - Pain Over Pleasure<\/span><\/h2><p style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">People are more than twice as likely to do something because it <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.iqmatrix.com\/pain-pleasure-principle\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">removes pain<\/a> than they are because it gives pleasure.<\/p><p style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">A potential client reading your sales copy may&nbsp;be feeling stressed out, angry that they\u2019re out of shape, or even embarrassed with their body.<\/p><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_custom_html_shortcode\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Would You Rather Avoid Pain or Create Pleasure? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AfYCicet5B\">https:\/\/t.co\/AfYCicet5B<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/marketingtips?src=hash\">#marketingtips<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/digitalmarketing?src=hash\">#digitalmarketing<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/obqJr78qO7\">pic.twitter.com\/obqJr78qO7<\/a><\/p>\u2014 CT Social (@CTSocializer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CTSocializer\/status\/782660430875529220\">October 2, 2016<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<code class=\"tve_js_placeholder\">[tcb-script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"][\/tcb-script]<\/code><\/div><p style=\"white-space: normal;\" spellcheck=\"false\">Now there\u2019s a fine line here. You don\u2019t want to lay into them and make them feel terrible about themselves, but<span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"> <span class=\"bold_text\">you need to <\/span><span class=\"bold_text\">highlight<\/span><\/span><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"> some of that pain, tap into their how their pain can be used as a motivator, and then show them how you can make them happier.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>Use questions such as:<\/p><blockquote class=\"\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px !important;\"><em>Are you frustrated that you\u2019ve tried so hard with so many diets, but still have unsightly body fat around your hips and stomach?<\/em><\/blockquote><p>\u200bOr,<\/p><blockquote class=\"\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px !important;\"><em>Are you worried that your partner no longer finds you attractive?<\/em><\/blockquote><p>It\u2019s then your job to build the reader up, and reveal exactly how amazing they can feel once they contact you.<\/p><h2 class=\"\"><span class=\"bold_text\">Tip #3 - Benefits NOT Features<\/span><\/h2><p>There are many features of your business that you <span class=\"italic_text\">could<\/span> sell:<\/p><ul class=\"thrv_wrapper\"><li class=\"\">30-minute exercise sessions<\/li><li class=\"\">A delicious nutrition plan<\/li><li class=\"\">Brand new equipment including kettlebells and free weights<\/li><li class=\"\">Etc.<\/li><\/ul><p><a href=\"http:\/\/donna-mariecoggins.com\/understanding-the-difference-between-features-and-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Features tell someone what\u2019s involved<\/a>, but they don\u2019t tell them why that\u2019s important or why they should really care.<\/p><p style=\"white-space: normal;\" spellcheck=\"false\">Someone reading this may just think \u201cS<em>o what?\u201d<\/em> to all of the above. You want them to know exactly why they\u2019re doing something. <a href=\"http:\/\/kexino.com\/marketing\/features-vs-benefits\/\" class=\"\">Tell what benefit they\u2019ll get<\/a>.<\/p><p>For instance, you could transform the above statement like this:<\/p><ul class=\"thrv_wrapper\"><li class=\"\" style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">30-minute sessions SO THAT you don\u2019t need to sacrifice your social life or time with your family to achieve the body of your dreams.<\/li><li class=\"\" style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">A delicious&nbsp;nutrition plan SO THAT you can eat all your favourite foods, guilt-free.<\/li><li class=\"\" style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">We use kettlebells, free weights, and brand new machines SO THAT you never get bored, and so that you burn the maximum calories per minute.<\/li><\/ul><p><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">Features tell\u2026 benefits sell!<\/span><\/span><\/p><h2 class=\"\"><span class=\"bold_text\">Tip #4 - Give Freebies<\/span><\/h2><p style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">This doesn\u2019t mean you need to give free training sessions, but it\u2019s always a good idea to include free, helpful information and advice in your copy.<\/p><p style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">You don\u2019t want to just write one big, long-ass sales pitch, that gives readers no reason to stick around unless they're absolutely dying to purchase.<\/p><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_custom_html_shortcode\" style=\"margin-bottom: -20px !important;\"><iframe src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/kfGijLoNvBQ08\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/kanye-west-make-it-rain-dollar-kfGijLoNvBQ08\"><\/a><\/p><div class=\"tve_iframe_cover\"><\/div><\/div><p class=\"italic_text tve_p_center\">You don't have to give away high dollar value freebies, but give away something that is useful to your target client.<\/p><p>Instead, <span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">drop titbits of advice into your copy.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">For instance, if I was advertising a boot camp, I might&nbsp;throw in a&nbsp;short workout people could try themselves at home.<\/p><p>If it was a diet book, I\u2019d tell people how to figure out their required calorie intake.<\/p><p style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlejackmarketing.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/give-it-away-now-why-giving-away-free-stuff-makes-sense-in-the-long-term\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Don\u2019t keep all your cards close to your chest<\/a>. By informing through your copy, not only are you paying your dues to the fitness industry, but you\u2019re also building trust. Even if someone doesn\u2019t invest in you, at least you can sleep soundly knowing that you\u2019ve helped one person get closer to their goals!<\/p><h2 class=\"\"><span class=\"bold_text\">The Ethical Dilemma of Copywriting<\/span><\/h2><p style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">Plenty of fitness pros have issues with selling. And that\u2019s normal. You don\u2019t want to turn into yet another shady internet marketer, but at the same time, you\u2019ve got to eat.<\/p><p style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">There\u2019s no reason why copywriting can\u2019t be done ethically, though, especially if you use the four tips we just discussed.<\/p><p style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\"><span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\">Above all, remember that you know your stuff.<\/span><\/span> You know how to help people lose weight, get fit, live longer, and be better parents\/ friends\/ husbands\/ wives.<span class=\"bold_text\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(239, 232, 88);\"><\/span><\/span><\/p><p style=\"\" spellcheck=\"false\">You know how to change lives for the better, and THAT is something that warrants selling.
